The Mercer Island High School Percussion Ensemble delivered an unforgettable evening of music and cultural exchange last night in a concert featuring CHIKIRI and The Taiko School. The performance marked the culmination of an eight-week artist residency with renowned taiko artists Rintaro and Asako Tateishi, who worked closely with students to explore the traditions, techniques, and artistry of Japanese taiko drumming.
The concert showcased the talents of the MIHS Percussion Ensemble and featured solist Lilian Wu on Marimba. A highlight of the evening was a fun combined performance bringing together percussion students from grades 6–12 across the Mercer Island School District, demonstrating the strength and continuity of the district’s music program. The event concluded with an electrifying performance by the professional taiko ensemble CHIKIRI, inspiring students and audience members alike.
“This extraordinary residency and culminating performance gave our students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn directly from world-class artists,” said Parker Bixby, Director of Bands at Mercer Island High School. “We are deeply grateful to the Mercer Island Schools Foundation and the Mercer Island Schools Band Boosters for their generous support and commitment to providing transformational arts experiences for our students."
