Uniform Campaign Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do we need new marching band uniforms?

Marching band uniforms are typically designed to last 10-15 years. Our current marching band uniforms are 13 years old and will be 14 years old by the time they are replaced.  They have been worn in every MIHS marching band season, multiple Seahawks half-time shows, and many out-of-town trips, including Tournament of Roses Parades and international performances in Canada, London, and Australia.

We have seen different types of issues with our current uniforms, which include jackets, bib pants, and shako hats. The bib fabric has softened over time and the cuffs droop instead of holding a crease.  Some jackets and bibs have stains, snags, and pilling.  Jackets have to be discontinued when the zippers break because this is too difficult to fix.  Shakos must be discontinued when the plume holder breaks, as this cannot be repaired.

Q: How much do we need to raise for the new uniforms?

We estimate that each uniform will cost approximately $500.  The goal is to purchase 325 new uniforms, for a total cost of approximately $162,500.

With funds set aside from the annual band fair share fee, the early generosity of our Angel Donors and the Class of 2022, our summer fundraising events, and additional uniform sponsors, we are closer to meeting our goal.

You can track how many uniforms we still need to fund on our Uniform Countdown Clock here.

Q: When will the Band receive the new uniforms?

The new uniforms will be delivered prior to the 2023 fall marching band season. The Mercer Island High School marching band will march in their new marching band uniforms at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in the Fall of 2023.

Q: How can I help?
